Brendan has close to 1 million euro in research funding including more than 330,000 euro as Principle Investigator. He has recently secured an Irish Cancer Society Research Funding Award (Improving Outcomes for Men Impacted by Cancer Award) to the value of 299988 euro in order to test the feasibility of a comprehensive multidisciplinary interventional programme for men living with advanced/metastatic genitourinary cancer.
Dr Noonan has over 40 research outputs including over 20 peer-reviewed publications (full list of publications available at https://scholar.google.com/citations. He is research active in cancer survivorship care and using VR simulation in undergraduate nurse and midwifery education. Other topics include lung cancer referral pathways, holistic needs assessment, eform solutions, and the development of proficiency based performance metrics.
A key responsibility of the Lecturer Practitioner role in particular is to lead collaborative research projects with our Health Service Providers. In 2018 as Principal investigator, we explored the feasibility of using a Head & Neck cancer Patient Concerns Inventory (H&Nc PCI) in a clinical setting in Ireland, a project funded by the SSWHG. We concluded from the project that the H&Nc PCI targets symptoms, facilitate referrals & improves patient care. It makes consultations more efficient and holistic and increases patient satisfaction with consultations. As a result, the H&Nc PCI has been implemented as a standard of care in the South-Infirmary Victoria University Hospital Cork.
Brendan is a member of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Otolaryngology (ENTO) Research Institute, Centre and Unit in Cork and the Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship Research Group in the School of Nursing and Midwifery University College Cork. He currently serves as a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) National Site Inspector. Over the past 18 years, he has presented his work in over 50 national and international conferences winning oral and poster presentation awards in the process.
At the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Noonan was the Director of Undergraduate Clinical Practice Education for all 5 Undergraduate Programmes from 2018 to 2021. Dr Noonan coordinates the delivery of physical assessment modules across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He is module leader and teaches on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, with a focus on fundamental nursing practice, simulation, physical assessment, basic life support, moving and handling and nursing research. Dr Noonan has practice development links to the South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital, Cork University Hospital and Tipperary University Hospital.
Dr Noonan is a member of a number of School and University Committees and research groups (e.g. Academic Council; Clinical Practice Committee; Student Experience Committee; School Executive Committee; Joint Steering Group Committee; Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship Research Group, Athena Swan Committee, among others). He is interim chair of the External Relations and Communications Committee and was the lead involved in the Culture and Organization Working group that led to the School of Nursing and Midwifery receiving the Athena SWAN Bronze award, making it the first School of Nursing and Midwifery to receive the prestigious award in Ireland.
Dr Noonan is research active on three key areas:
1. Cancer Survivorship: With a specific focus on mens' health, the experience of the entire cancer trajectory and the supports required throughout.
2. Nursing and Midwifery Education/Continuing Professional Development: Using Virtual Reality in Nursing and Midwifery Education; History Taking and the Complete Physical Examination
3. Proficiency Based Progression Training: Development of tracheostomy care metrics
Dr Noonan has supervised 14 MSc students to completion and is currently supervising 5 MSc and 2 PhD students.
